ROYAL FLYING CORPS

The first unit specifically meant to counter the Zeppelin threat was No. 33 (Home Defence) Sqn, formed on 12 January 1916 under Maj Arthur A. B. Thompson, equipped with FE 2bs and FE 2ds. Its headquarters was at Gainesborough in Lincolnshire, and the unit had flight stations at Brattleby (Scampton) and Kirton-in-Lindsey, both also in Lincolnshire. Prior to that, II Reserve Home Defence Training Squadron had been established at Northolt under Maj B. F. Moore on 1 November 1915. During the course of 1916, No. 33 (Home Defence) Sqn would be joined by Nos. 36, 37, 38, 39, 50, 51, 75, 76, 77 and 78 (Home Defence) Sqns.
